Bodegas Y Vinedos Alonso Toribio - Wines
Francisco Alonso Toribio had been the Cellar Master at Vega Sicilia for 31 years, prior to joining in 2003 his daughter Maite in her new venture/winery created in 1998, following her Diploma of Oenology, and an internship in a winery in Peñafiel. The winery is located in the small village of Santibañez de Valcorba, right outside the Ribera del Duero appellation, therefore belonging to the D.O. Viños de la Tierra de Castilla Y Leon.
It is interesting to know that Maite Toribio was born at Vega Sicilia, and spent all her childhood there. As for Vega Sicilia, the Toribio family purchases, and pays top top prices for the best grapes available to them, from the very same vineyards Vega Sicilia buys from. The wine is 100% Tempranillo, non-irrigated. The winemaking here is also identical to the Vega Sicilia one. The grapes are hand-picked and placed in small crates, and immediately put in refrigerated trucks. once the grapes are delivered, they go through severe sorting and then cryo-macerated for 12 hours. Then they are placed into tanks and fermentation starts by bringing the temperature up to 28 Celsius, to induce spontaneous alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeast. Then it undergoes malolactic fermentation in French barrels, and is aged for 12 months. After bottling, the wines are kept in the cellar for another 6 months before release. The wine is almost black in color, intense deep nose of super ripe dark fruit, minerals, licorice, plum, smoke. Full body structure on the palate, fat with a thick velvety texture, with flavors similar to the nose, rich, jammy fruit, and a packed finish with ripe tannins. This wine needs breathing at first, and is a cellar keeper.
